You go through life thinking there’s so much you need . . .
Until you leave with only your phone, your wallet, and a picture of your mother.
Marin hasn’t spoken to anyone from her old life since the day she left everything behind. No one knows the truth about those final weeks. Not even her best friend Mabel. But even thousands of miles away from the California coast, at college in New York, Marin still feels the pull of the life and tragedy she’s tried to outrun. Now, months later, alone in an emptied dorm for winter break, Marin waits. Mabel is coming to visit and Marin will be forced to face everything that’s been left unsaid and finally confront the loneliness that has made a home in her heart.
We Are Okay by Nina LaCour
Publisher: Dutton Books for Young Readers
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary
Publication Date: February 17th, 2017
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐½
I know that I am always alone, even when surrounded by people, so I let the emptiness in.
We Are Okay is quiet, but powerful.
It delicately taps into your emotions, and makes you feel—but most of all, it makes you ache.
I didn’t to read much about this book before starting it, and it was the best decision I could have made, because there is a reason the synopsis is so vague, and there is a reason why my review is.
🌥
Every tug at your heart, every sudden weight in your stomach that you feel, that Nina LaCour brings to life with simple, but evocative words, makes you experience the heavy sadness tinged with apathy that lingers in Marin’s life as if it’s your own.
(…) there are too many failings. Not enough hope. Everything is despair. Everything is suffering.
Two delicate strands—one of the past, and one of the present—are slowly intertwined, and when they finally meet, every single emotion you are made to live through throughout this book makes sense to you.
🌥
We Are Okay tells a story about family, friendship, love, and finding yourself—it’s a glimpse into a person’s life that is filled with melancholy, deep-seated loneliness, and a heavy, drawn out kind of heartbreak—and its woven together beautifully.
Something is shifting inside me. A heavy cloud passing. A glimpse of brightness.
🌥
We Are Okay is quiet, but powerful.
It delicately taps into your emotions, and makes you feel—but most of all, it makes you ache.
And heal.

Aw, this story sounds so emotional and great. I thought this book was a graphic novel at first from just looking at the cover! The cover is so pretty. Great review 🙂

“Quiet but powerful” really is the perfect description of We Are Okay.
Not much happens but it stayed with me, mostly because of the writing and the depiction of grief. It’s my favorite Nina LaCour book. (I’ve only read two, the other is Everything Leads to You, which I also liked, but it’s completely different in themes and tone.)
Great review!

I find that knowing as little as possible works better for most books. I always tend to have some sort of expectation whether I want to or not and they only get more skewered with other people’s descriptions, but I really liked how you built your review for this one. I really enjoyed reading We Are Okay, because 1. I am a big Nina LaCour fan and 2. there really is power in quietness. Such a beautiful post!

True, especially reading really enthusiastic reviews, whether they’re positive or negative, always makes me be on the lookout for the aspects that were mentioned, when I read the book, so I try not to do it too often.
Ohh I’m really excited to read Nina LaCour’s other books now! Do you have a favorite?
Thank you so much, Kat! 💙💙

I don’t really know how I decide that, but with some books I seek out all the reviews and with others I turn to a hermit and don’t want to hear so much as a whisper. It’s strange but as we both mentioned now haha it works better a lot of times.
I really like the book she wrote with David Levithan – You Know Me Well. It’s in alternating POVs of a gay guy and a lesbian girl during PRIDE. It’s a lot about friendship with very little plot and no in depth character study either. It’s mostly just one of those fun and quick reads that leaves a warm feeling afterwards.
And Everything Leads to You is also good. I didn’t adore those characters, but it was set in the film industry and I am always here for that.

Ohh you’re right, it honestly really depends on the book. Mostly, I read more reviews when I’m unsure about whether or not I should give a book a chance, I think.
Thanks so much for the recommendations!! I feel like the books you recommend are oftentimes ones that haven’t really been on my radar so far, so I really appreciate it. 😊 And your description of You Know Me Well makes me think I’d really love it – Everything Leads to You is on my TBR! I’m really excited about it.
(Do you work in the film industry?)

I am happy to hear that! Introducing people to books they might not have noticed otherwise is why we are here, right?
Well, I am currently unemployed, BUT I studied film-, TV- and Media production at uni, worked at the ORF and film distribution and casting. So, it’s my field of expertise.

& That is so cool, I remember taking the ORF tour on a school trip, and I loved it there. I hope you find a job that you really love soon. ❤

Lovely review that really captured the atmosphere of this book. I really loved it but it is a slow burn and very introspective and, yes, quietly powerful. I’ve not read everything by LaCour yet (but I love her so!) but I think so far my fave by her is Hold Still.

Thank you so, so much, Cade! That’s really what I set out to do, so it means a lot to me that you said that. 💓
I don’t think Hold Still is even on my TBR? I’ll have to check it out on Goodreads. Thanks for the rec! ☺️

Wow, this book sounds so lovely! This quote definitely convinced me to pick it up: “Something is shifting inside me. A heavy cloud passing. A glimpse of brightness.” I can already tell it’s going to be my type of read; kinda reminds me of Aristotle and Dante. 😊
